We get so caught up in appearances and the window dressings                                           that we lose our focus

When we pretend to be someone

we're not, we lie to ourselves

It's bad enough when we to try to fit in at all cost, but there is something that is far worst then trading in our personal dreams, our passions and everything that makes us unique, so that we can fit in? It's when we to lie ourselves. When we pretend to be someone we are not, we are not being honest or truthful with ourselves. The danger is, that we can get so good at pretending to be someone else, that we forget who we were to begin with, and everything that made us special and unique is lost.

Then why, do we do it? There are many reasons why a person may choose to pretend to be someone they're not, and why they choose to hide their true face from others. We think that we are not good enough the way we are, we may feel that we don't quite measure up when we compare ourselves to others, we fear that others will judge us, criticize us, look down on us, make fun of us or reject us. Let's face it, no one wants to be thought of as an the odd ball. We want to feel like we belong, we don't like it when people don't like us. We have a deep need to be liked and accepted.

Fear of rejection might explain why, some of us choose to hide our private face from other people, but then, why, do we also try to hide it from ourselves? What possible reasons could we have for that?

We all have a certain image of ourselves, of who we are, and who we want to be, but we may be afraid, that if we look hard enough or dig deep enough, we might not like what we find, we may not be, the person we think we are. We might uncover some not so nice things about ourselves, things about our character and personality that are not so wholesome or so pleasant.

An honest, open minded, careful and thorough search of our souls, may reveal and expose weaknesses, flaws and imperfections that we don't want to know about. We may find out, some things about ourselves that we we might not like. The  face and the reflection that we see, when we look in the mirror, does not always tell the whole story. But that is not necessarily a bad thing, in fact, it can be a very good thing. First of all, we are all flawed, defective and broken in one way or another, no one is perfect. Knowing and being aware of our weaknesses and our flaws can inspire and motivate us to make improvements and become the persons we wish we could be.

The problem is, that we can get so caught up in appearances, in the façades and in the window dressings, and all the games that people play, that we begin to lose our focus, of what truly matters.
